How Organic Essential Oils Can Improve Your Beauty Routine
Consumers are focusing on a more natural approach towards living, including eating organic, wearing sustainable fashion, and making their hair and skincare more environmentally friendly. The beauty industry is chock-full of synthetic chemicals that harm you and the world around you. Organic essential oils may be the solution!
Why use harmful chemicals that may wreak havoc on your long term health when nature has provided us with holistic solutions to our everyday problems. Our wellness routines shouldn't be produced by a chemist in a lab coat. Nature provides organic essential oils that can work synergistically with your bodies!
What Makes An Essential Oil Organic?
Essential oils are extracts of the essence of a plant or tree. While the plant life is organic, it doesn't automatically mean the essential oil is.
First of all, the plants or trees must be grown to organic standards. Then, the harvesting and processing must also follow organic guidelines to be labeled as organic. That means there can't be any synthetic pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, or other products known to hurt our health and our environment throughout the life of the plant and the processing of the oil as well!
This doesn't automatically make an essential oil more effective, however. Growing conditions and processing quality will affect the potency of the organic essential oils more than whether or not they conform to organic standards or employ conventional farming practices. Lack of proper irrigation, extreme temperatures, diseases, and pests can all alter the terpenoid profile of essential oil extracted from plant life.
But, if you have the choice, it's best to ensure your essential oils are organic since the essence of the plant material won't be the only thing that makes it into the oil!
Why Is It Important To Use Organic Essential Oils?
Conventional farming practices utilise synthetic pesticides, fungicides, and fertilisers that absorb into the plants just like a lotion absorbs into your skin. Then, a lot of plant material is used to extract essential oils. When I say a lot, I mean it!
It can take up to 116 lavender plants just to extract 1 lb of lavender essential oil. Others may take more or less depending on the amount of oil produced by each plant or tree.
While the excessive plant material provides enough essence of the plant itself to distill a potent essential oil, it can also create a concentrated form of synthetic chemical residue left from pesticides and other harmful sprays used when growing.
These concentrated chemicals can cause harm to you in ways that currently haven't been studied enough to discuss! There are pesticides, fungicides, and fertilisers that can increase the risk for certain cancers when in a concentrated form.
While they are diluted and allowed to degrade when sprayed on food products, making essential oils essentially re-concentrates them. Diluted chemicals may cause little to no harm but in concentrated form, they can cause all kinds of issues.
In addition to your health, using organic essential oils is also better for the environment. Since harmful chemicals can't be used when the plants are grown, the environment won't have to pay the price for your beauty products!
How Organic Essential Oils Work
Organic essential oils are mostly made of extracted hydrocarbon compounds found in the parent plant. The majority of the hydrocarbon compounds are called Terpenes. These organic compounds are found in all plant life and are what gives the plant life its unique flavour and scent.
Terpenes also interact with our limbic system, which is responsible for regulating emotion and memory. That connection is why you can smell something and immediately be reminded of a connected memory to that scent.
Certain organic essential oils can be calming or energising due to the activation of the limbic system when inhaled or absorbed through your skin. This is the main system that organic essential oils use to create the emotional stimulations that they are known for.
Organic essential oils are also known for their effects with direct skin contact. For example, Ylang-Ylang is known to help treat skin conditions.
How To Use Organic Essential Oils In Your Beauty Routine
Choosing beauty products that only include organic essential oils is a good way to make your beauty routine healthier for you and the planet!
The naturally occurring Terpenes and other hydrocarbons will soak into the skin, providing a myriad of benefits.
It is well known that low quality sleep and stress are contributing factors to the signs of ageing, like wrinkles and saggy skin. Organic essential oils can help you relax and promote better sleep, all working as a natural solution for anti-ageing.
Some essential oils are known for the promotion of healthier skin, hair, and nails. Other oils are known to help reduce the appearance of acne and common skin conditions like rosacea.
The combination of alleviating stress, promoting relaxation, aiding the health of hair, skin, and nails, and improving the appearance of common skin ailments all work as a natural boost to your beauty routine!
